Location
Pickens County, South Carolina
Owner
South Carolina Department of Transportation
Project Details
King Asphalt recently completed the US-123 Road Construction project located in Pickens County, South Carolina. This extensive undertaking aimed to improve the US-123 roadway by implementing various enhancements and upgrades.
The scope of work for this project included the following key tasks:
8” FDP (Full Depth Patching): A total area of 4,200 square yards underwent 8-inch full-depth patching. This process addressed underlying structural issues, ensuring a robust foundation for the subsequent layers of pavement.
2” Milling: Approximately 111,450 square yards of the existing surface were milled down by 2 inches. This step removed the worn-out asphalt layer, creating a smooth base for the upcoming overlay.
Surface C (Leveling & Drives): A total of 812 tons of Surface C materials were used for leveling the roadway and improving driveways. This step contributed to a smoother driving experience and enhanced accessibility for residents and businesses along US-123.
Surface B (Mainline): Approximately 12,259 tons of Surface B materials were utilized for the mainline paving. Surface B is known for its durability and resistance to wear and tear, making it ideal for high-traffic areas.
Borrow: A total of 462 cubic yards of borrow materials were employed to meet project requirements. Borrow materials are often used to supplement existing materials and ensure proper roadbed compaction.
The pavement design for this project consisted of an 8-inch patching layer, 2-inch uniform milling, and a final 220 pounds per square yard (PSY) Hot Mix Asphalt Surface B layer.
To minimize disruption to traffic, the project was exclusively carried out during nighttime hours, with lane closure restrictions in effect from 8 PM to 6 AM. This approach allowed for efficient completion while minimizing inconvenience to motorists.
The US-123 road spans approximately 74 miles in total, with 57.5 miles in South Carolina alone. It serves as a vital connection between Greenville, SC and just west of Toccoa, GA, passing through the city of Clemson, SC. The contracted section of US-123 ran for 2.31 miles through Easley, SC, and included the resurfacing of on/off ramps connecting to SC-153.
Notable features of the project included a four-lane divided highway with a grass median, ten intersections, sixteen commercial drives, and thirty-five residential driveways.
Through the successful completion of the US-123 Road Construction project, King Asphalt has improved the safety, functionality, and overall quality of this significant roadway in Pickens County, South Carolina.
